SYNOPSIS: Here we can see that the MERFOLK pilot is basically trying to get into the last 8 - whilst hoping for a field of blue control decks. The Blue Control decks ought to be able to eliminate aggro & combo decks. Once the Merfolk pilot is in a sea of blue, the mid-range aggro/counter deck can then put pressure on the control decks with Islandwalking creatures, whilst backing up the force with countermagic against the critical removal spells.
The last 20 man legacy turnout (for GP Madrid) at FanBoy saw 3/4 of the top 4 decks as the ZOO deck archetype; and if Merfolk had been in such a top 4, then it would have played out differently. But Tom's choice of deck meant that the moment he cracked through the field and into a top 4 of Blue decks - then Tom had the RIGHT DECK to give him the best opportunity to take the win.
